When I tip for bad service.
What is this impulse that forces me to put change or even a dollar in the can when server is rude and I know this donation will not be acknowledged in any way? It is truly pathological the way I find an excuse to give money to even the most sullen employee.

I do this, too. For two reasons. 1) Your rudeness won't stop me from being polite and 2) If there's any chance that your rudeness is because other people in my demographic have been ass-y to you, then I want to show that people in my demographic can also be nice to you.

Maybe that niceness could come from forms non- monetary.

What other forms of niceness would you recommend, Biffy? Sucking the employees' toes?
— stacy
Just a quick elbow massage, neck blowing, or love poem.

Maybe next time I'll just let our hands touch as I get my change and then make quick, coy eye contact.

I don't put money in tip jars unless the person working the counter was polite and friendly. I will tip a server at a restaurant if they don't call me sweetie or hun, if they check on my shortly after I start eating (not when I'm finished), and if the service was basically fine. Wait til I'm done to ask me if it's okay, or ignore me and my signals, and you can forget about it.
