When a conversation is subordinated to a ringing telephone

"Sorry, I know we're talking about something really important right now, but this ringing telephone has absolute control over my life, so we'll have to finish speaking later."

Even worse, when you've been waiting patiently in line and you're next, but the store phone starts ringing, and the sales person answers it. It's a customer with a question about something stupid and they TAKE THE CALL! It's like virtual line-jumping. I HATE it.

And even worse than that is when you're the sales person trying to get through a line of customers and the phone rings and you run to answer it because you are supposed to get to the phone within 3 rings, and it turns out to be the stupidest, most irrelevant question in the world asked by someone who insists on explaining the story of their life and you dont care, when you could have been getting rid of all those customers in front of your face.

Hate your job? Quit. Customers are the heart of the biz.

gwkgnwnvw has clearly never worked retail. Like Randal said, "This job would be great if it wasn't for the fuckin' customers." Not that all customers are bad; in fact, lots are great, but the rude, impatient, self-important morons that seem to actively TRY to piss you off...well, sometimes one bad apple can spoil the barrel. For that day, at least.

Even WORSE than all of that is when you're on the phone with someone, and another person who is physically in the room with you keeps trying to join into the phone conversation by yelling their input! Really now, does it matter that it rained 3 inches and not 2, like I said? Does it REALLY matter that we had 8 people over last night for dinner and not 6? GAH!

My husband is an attorney. Meaning his phone interrupts us at any and all times. His criminal clients (and their friends/families) seem to think he wants and needs to hear from them at all hours. Even mundane crap that has nothing to do with anything important.
