PEEVE ››

When there is a standing ovation in a crowd that you don't feel like being part of but eventually have to give into just so you can see the stage (and not feel like an asshole).

I also hate when shows manipulate the audience into standing at the end of the show, tricking the audience into doing a standing O. this happened when I saw Mama Mia on b'way (that's a whole 'nother peeve). The cast makes the audience stand up and dance during the last number. And then, whoops, the curtain goes down and we were still standing.

Or the fact that an "encore" is now a planned part of the gig and the standing o and endless applause are required to "convince" the star to return?

I'm sure I'm on someone's peeve list because I refuse to stand for a standing O unless I think they really deserve it. My mom and I used to joke that people must love performing in Seattle because they essentially get standing O's for breathing on stage. Then I moved and realized that EVERYONE gives EVERY performance a standing o. Lame.
