When you are waiting in an obviously long checkout line and the person behind starts to sigh- LOUDLY, then starts to complain- LOUDLY, as if to draft you into their small army of self pity.

Perhaps they believe you will join forces with them and wage an attack on the cashier, or rise up against the management team at Wal-Mart. After all, why should a person have to wait more than 23 seconds to pay for their cat litter?

I have found that a shock-and-awe approach works wonders to shut these people up. For example, I was waiting to vote on election day and this woman was standing next to me in line saying "Can you believe this? I mean, can you BELIEVE this?" so I said "Yeah, it's almost like in the Congo, where people have to worry about being sodomized with knives for having political views." She grew very uncomfortable and spent the rest of the wait not only silent but also avoiding any and all eye contact: aces!

I think when the person behind you does this, they are trying to express their hope that YOU won't take so long as the person in front of you! It's very passive-agressive.
