When people tell me to "calm down" when I am already calm.
I WAS calm. Now I am irate.

ARRRGH. I hate that, too. And you're exactly right. Saying only makes me furious!

This is because "calm down" is really just "shut up" dressed up to sound like it is supposed to help you. For the record, somebody tells me to "calm down" everyday.

I LOVE telling people that bug me (mainly co-workers) to calm down when they're even the slightest bit upset about something just to make them fly into a rage. I can't help it. Then, just as they reach the pinnacle of their rage, I tell them to "pull themselves together". Then I scamper off, giggling. :D

I once got this, whilst calmly trying to repeatedly explain a simple task to someone who wasn't listening: "I know you are frustrated, but we are just trying to help you." I have never spoken to that person again.

My step mother does this all the time. Of course, she's the one who is constantly stressed out. I think she's just projecting her emotional state onto everyone.

Yeah, and to be honest mate, telling me calm down has just wound me up! I think 9 times out of 10 the person who tells you to calm down is the person who is flustered.
