Email has become a very casual thing outside the business world. So what if the person types in e.e. cummings style. You still get the message right? No one is getting graded here. That's like telling a Texan to speak with a New York accent so you feel comfortable in understanding them better...

That is actually quite annoying. Anybody taught decent English in America is basically taught the same way and for words to be misspelled and not properly seperated or announced by certain symbols can really throw off our understanding of it. It means I would have to actually slow down and read every word slowly to actually know what that person wrote, instead of breezing through it like something written in proper English. Not doing it properly is almost like writing/typing in a differnt language.

A friend and I were discussing the lack of capitals, and he, and others, feel that it's a way of being less formal with people.

If it really is faster and you want to confirm attendance or something chore-like like that, then okay, but sometimes it implies that you just couldn't be bothered to treat your friends to the same level of aesthetics you'd offer a comparative stranger. OR it looks intentional and self-conscious, and really if you are spending time to put conscious energy into APPEARING relaxed and un-uptight instead of, like, feeding third-world whales or saving beached babies or whatever, then you definitely need to reprioritize.

It doesn't bother me when it's a quick line that is easily read, but I think the peeve is talking about longer emails. Reading paragraphs written like this gives me a headache.
