I never really understood it myself but have been witness several times. Why would you clap when someone's just shattered a plate?? Why would you cheer for them??

We used to do that at my college. It immediately puts the person at ease instead of having 1000s of eyes looking at them in a scornful manner. Plus, its no big deal just a plate. The food is replaceable.

Fred, how exactly does a round of applause make someone feel more at ease than a thousand eyes staring at them? Don't you think people are not only going to clap but also stare so they know what they are clapping AT?
— Tiff
TIFF~ it turns a moment of "Oh crap" into a moment where you can laugh at yourself. Grow up hun and see the other side of things.

Hey Fred I have to say that's a glass-half-full interpretation if I ever heard one. The applause has always seemed more sarcastic to me, as in "nice work you klutz." Also not sure the camaraderie of your college cafeteria extends itself in fancy restaurants, and cocktail parties, and antique stores. Maybe a few more sides to see here...

I think the clapping is a good way to mitigate the fear from the crowd, and embarrassment from the drop-ee. He or she can bow and then the life threatening shards of glass will no longer puncture the mood, and leave it out in the sun to die.

try and picture something breaking and NO SOUND AFTER cause you know everybody fucking gasps and shuts up

how about people who clap when someone falls? when I was a waitress, I slipped once and the entire restaurant applauded...I had just broken my arm. Pain + Embarrassment = seriously not cool.

In some places it's an anti-bad luck superstition.
