PEEVE ››

When you're at a party, in a circle of people, and one of them excuses himself by saying, "I'm going to go get a drink."

Why is this a socially acceptable norm? Why does he have to use "getting a drink" as a pretense to leave the circle of people? Why can't he just say, "Excuse me, I'm going to go talk to those other people over there."

I don't really see what your objection is, Rob. Perhaps it is annoying if he doesn't actually go get a drink. If that's the case, you should call him on it. Follow him to his new group of conversants and say "Hey, Bill, forget about that drink you left my group to seek out?" Guaranteed, though, Rob, you'll be the one who looks like an asshole.

Yes, I think when no new drink is present, it warrants criticism, but it's not such a bad way to leave a conversation. Though, it's become so common place that it's almost trite, in which case the peeve meter peaks once again. I just say "I'll talk to you later."

oh wait, that's an excuse to leave??! and to think... here i was following said leaver hoping they'd pour me a drink, too. how embarassing...

"Excuse me, I'm drunk."

sometimes i say that and mean it but then i get sidetracked by another convo. . . also, turkeytime, if that is your real name, don't make it so personal. . .i'm sure he wasn't talking about you.

Rob, does it really even matter? So if someone says, "I swallowed a bug" to get themselves away from a conversation they dont want to be a part of you are going to be angry? Grow up. If people want out, let them out. Stop being the conversation police. People do things differently than you. Deal with it.

I'd love to discuss this scintillating topic further with ya'll, but I gotta get another drink.

Fred, the point of this site is that it's for pet peeves, which are thing we have to deal with, but they still irritate us. This is a social convention that Rob dislikes because the person isn't being honest, I don't think he's actually extremely angry about it.

But... what if you're thirsty??

Rob, man - you're boring. Get over it.
